Cipango was the term with which Marco Polo first literally defined the Japanese territory, a territory still unexplored in those years.


According to Marco Polo, the island of Cipango is very large.
The inhabitants are fair-skinned, civilized, and good-looking. They worship idols and are independent of any foreign nation.

Gold is found in abundance, even though the country is closed to foreign trade. The royal palace is very large and the roof is covered with gold. The rooms are covered in gold two fingers thick, as are the windows, the walls, the halls and everything.
